Toll rises to 30 as valley continues to simmer amid curfew, Hurriyat extends strike call for 12 & 13 JulyAs the communication has been partially restored in south Kashmir and the J-K government has started to compile the list of people killed in last three days, the death toll has risen to 30.

The official report has listed 29 civilian protestors and a policeman among the 30 people killed since Friday night after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani.

On Sunday evening, the police officials had confirmed the death of 21 civilians since Friday night. On Sunday late evening a 13-year-old boy Asif Ahmad Bhat of Chitragam in Zainpora Shopian was killed when security forces opened fire on protesters while a 24-year-old woman Yasmeena Jan succumbed to injuries late on Saturday night.

The official report puts the death toll in Kulgam and Shopian districts at 12 which was earlier only reported as eight. Officials at District Hospital Kulgam also confirmed that three people were brought dead to hospital on Saturday. The people killed on Saturday, who were not earlier reported include Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, Shahid Gulzar, Shahid Hussain Bhat and Bilal Ahmad Shah.

Even as the strict curfew is in place for the third consecutive day, there are reports of people defying the curfew and taking to streets at different places in central and south Kashmir. Kashmir valley erupted after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani in an encounter on Friday evening.

While the government imposed curfew in all the major towns and villages of Kashmir, people took to streets in large numbers. The security forces fired bullets and pellets to disperse the protestors resulting in killing of 30 people.

It includes a policeman Afroz Ahmad, who was killed on Sunday when protesters pushed a police mobile bunker vehicle into the river Jhelum at Sangam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. The police man, the driver of the vehicle, was inside when the protesters pushed the vehicle into the river.

Meanwhile, expressing anguish over the killing of civilians who were killed from past three days, Hurriyat groups on Monday have extended the strike call for more two days.

In a joint statement, Chairman Hurriyat (G), Syed Ali Geelani, Chairman Hurriyat (M), Mirwaiz Molvi Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), Muhammad Yasin Malik extended the strike call for Tuesday and Wednesday.
